www.shahriar.info (শাহরিয়ারের স্বপ্নবিলাস) Bangladesh Alarming Rise in ‘Disappearances’ Government Needs to Account for Missing Opposition Figures Human Rights Watch April 27, 2012 (New York) — The Bangladesh government should immediately order an independent and impartial investigation into the growing number of cases where opposition members and political activists have vanished without trace, Human Rights Watch said today. The most recent episode, on April 17, 2012, involved Elias Ali, secretary of the Sylhet Division of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Ali’s case is part of an alarming rise in such incidents, including those of opposition members and political activists. Human Rights Watch recently expressed concern over the April 4 abduction and subsequent death of Aminul Islam, a prominent labor rights activist. Ain-O-Sailash Kendra, a leading human rights group in Bangladesh, has documented the disappearance of least 22 people in 2012 alone. According to Odhikar, another Dhaka-based human rights group, more than 50 people have disappeared since 2010. “The rise in disappearances, particularly of opposition members and activists, requires a credible and independent investigation,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The government has taken no serious steps to ensure such an investigation of these disappearances nor to prevent them in the first place.” Ali and his driver, Ansar Ali, have both vanished. ‘LOOKING FOR YOU’ along with another song ‘PASSING’, (now also on YOUTUBE), was recorded at the same time as the other 10 more well-known songs, (such as NOTHING SPECIAL), that became the album SWEET NOTHING – the second album by Australian musician MARK GILLESPIE, recorded in 1981 at MUSIC FARM STUDIOS in northern NSW. Both LOOKING FOR YOU and PASSING became B-sides for the first two singles to be released from SWEET NOTHING. Although MARK GILLESPIE would have liked the album to be a 12-song album, in the interests of maintaining the highest sound quality possible, it was decided to send these two songs to near oblivion, where they have been until recently, when they were included as bonus tracks with the AZTEC MUSIC re-issue in 2011 of SWEET NOTHING. (By way of explanation, the vinyl grooves become too close together if the album is too long, and sound quality is compromised). In some vindication for the 30-year sin-binning of these two songs, it became common practice for studio engineers in Australia to use SWEET NOTHING to fine-tune their sound equipment, such was the excellence of the sound quality achieved by JOHN SAYERS and JOHN FRENCH. 30 years after being recorded, these two songs have at last re-emerged from oblivion. On LOOKING FOR YOU, MARK GILLESPIE plays acoustic finger-picking guitar, steel slide guitar, keyboards, and does lead and harmony vocals ROSS HANNAFORD, Australia’s leading guitarist, is this time content to play electric rhythm guitar. TIM …
